Welcome to Alvarado

Population: DELICIOUS.

It's always a cause of polite celebration, here in the Buffalo Brownies lab, when one of our creations is let loose upon an unwitting public. It's like the film 'Outbreak', only fewer monkeys. And less global-killer virus. Okay, it's nothing like the film 'Outbreak'. Anyway, as we pop the cork on the supermarket-own economy cava provided by Management and fill our beakers to the brim (they're not very large beakers, barely more than a pipette, to be fair), we take a moment to reflect upon the development of the new flavour.

Alvarado, whose name reflects an historically interesting town in California, is our beetroot brownie. An early version of the recipe saw us adding a beetroot jelly (much like the apple jelly found in our beloved Eve) into the Pure batter. Caster sugar and a mere 70% cocoa solids in the chocolate didn't *quite* offer the right contrast of dark bitterness to complement the earthy sweetness of the beetroot, so we turned instead to the darker sugar and chocolate employed in the sophisticated Connoisseur; little tweaks to the rich, ruddy beetroot juice content (and a swap from beetroot jelly to cubes of beetroot proper) gave us the finished product you can now see on The Range: Alvarado.

  • Post-Atomic haze

    Oh dear God what do you people do in that kitchen?

    Just got my first order, and am sitting sprawled in a post-Atomic haze, barely able to type.

    Not only are they some of the best blondies I've ever had (oh, and they go great with a beer, by the way) but they came right through my letterbox less than two days after I ordered. Perfection!
